Govindrao Mokate Declared MVA Candidate for Rahuri By-Election

Mumbai, April 6: The prolonged political suspense surrounding the Rahuri by-election in Maharashtra has finally come to an end. The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) has officially announced Govindrao Mokate as the candidate for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

This development occurred after a meeting between BJP’s state president Ravindra Chavan and Minister Vikhe Patil with Prajakta Tanpure, the first candidate from the NCP (SP) within the MVA. They discussed strategies for the upcoming by-election and candidate selection. During the meeting, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also spoke with Tanpure over the phone, urging him to facilitate an uncontested election.

Following the meeting, Tanpure stated that he would discuss the matter with party supporters and make a final decision accordingly. With the nomination deadline set for April 6, the NCP (SP) decided that Govindrao Mokate would file his nomination.

Mokate’s announcement has clarified the path for the Rahuri by-election. Tanpure, who lost the Rahuri assembly seat in 2024, has previously served as a state minister in the MVA government. Speculations about his joining the BJP had been circulating in political circles, but it is now clear that the MVA has chosen Mokate as its candidate.

Political experts believe that Mokate’s nomination presents a strong electoral challenge for the MVA in the Rahuri region. This seat has been significant for both the BJP and MVA in previous elections. The MVA has taken into account local voter preferences and political equations while selecting its candidate for this seat.

The selection of candidates and party strategies for this by-election have drawn the attention of all political parties to Rahuri. With Mokate’s nomination, the direction of the by-election is now clear, and political activities have intensified.
