
Bengaluru, April 25: The 18th edition of the World 10K Bengaluru is set to take place this Sunday, featuring a strong lineup of elite Indian athletes. Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot will officially flag off the prestigious race.
The competition boasts a total prize pool of $210,000. The male winner will receive ₹300,000, while the female winner will take home ₹275,000. Additionally, any athlete breaking the event record will earn a bonus of ₹100,000.
Defending champion Abhishek Pal will return to the field, having set the Indian men’s event record last year with a time of 29 minutes and 12 seconds.
Abhishek stated, “Bengaluru has always been special for me. I have participated in several 10K races here, and breaking the course record last year boosted my confidence. This race is a great opportunity to assess my condition at the start of the season. I am hoping for another strong performance this time.”
Kartik Karkera will also compete, having recently excelled in the National Marathon Championship and the Tata Mumbai Marathon.
Kartik remarked, “I am in good form, but my goal is to prepare for larger competitions like the Asian Games. The 10K race enhances both speed and endurance, which are essential for marathons.”
In the women’s category, Sanjivani Jadhav aims to make history by winning the Indian elite title for the third consecutive time, having been the champion in the last two editions.
Sanjivani commented, “My training has been consistently good. Now, my focus is on the 5K and 10K to strengthen my preparation for the Asian Games. I want to defend my title while also achieving better timing.”
This year, over 36,000 participants are expected, setting a new record for the event.
Among those flagging off the race are Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Home Minister and Karnataka Athletics Association President Dr. G. Parameshwar, and international event ambassador Blanka Vlašić.
Additionally, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will participate, alongside Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, Tejasvi Surya, Brigadier Ranjit Alva, and Italy’s Consul General Giandomenico Milano.
