Jammu, March 20: Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Kavinder Gupta, responded on Friday to social activist Sonam Wangchuk’s release from detention under the National Security Act (NSA). He emphasized the urgent need to combat drug abuse, labeling it a serious threat to society.
Following his release, Wangchuk stated his commitment to work for the interests of India and Ladakh. Gupta praised Wangchuk’s remarks, noting, “This is a positive mindset. If such thinking had existed earlier, he might not have been detained. The government has always worked in the interest of Ladakh, and all actions will remain within constitutional boundaries.”
Regarding the rising drug trade in Punjab and Himachal, Gupta expressed concern, stating, “The drug issue is very alarming. I believe the entire society is somehow connected to this problem. Parents worry about their children. We are working swiftly to eliminate drugs, and the government has previously addressed this issue. We are continuously working on promoting organic farming and tourism. There is significant potential for various initiatives in Himachal. I will do whatever I can.”
When asked about the impact of rising tensions in the Middle East on India, Gupta remarked, “Currently, we do not see any effects in Himachal, but as the conflict escalates, concerns may rise. During such crises, we strive to create an environment where no one faces difficulties.”
On the topic of conversion, Gupta stated, “There should be laws regarding conversion. Some individuals attempt to convert others through inducement, which should be prohibited. Such practices should be curtailed in India. The government is focusing on this issue, and if we can also concentrate on it in Himachal, we will make significant efforts.”
Commenting on the film ‘Dhundhar 2,’ which depicts former mafia figure Atiq Ahmed’s connection to the ISI, Gupta said, “All films undergo censorship, especially those that promote patriotism and reveal the truth. Many films in the past have misled the public. I believe the government should make patriotic films like Dhundhar tax-free to encourage more viewers.”
