Government to Boost Employment and Skills with Khelo India Mission in Budget 2026

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, highlighting the significant role of the sports sector in employment, skill development, and job creation. She proposed launching a decade-long initiative named the Khelo India Mission to transform the sports ecosystem across the country.

During her speech, the Finance Minister stated, “The sports sector offers numerous opportunities for employment, skill enhancement, and career growth. Building on the systematic nurturing of sports talent initiated by the Khelo India programme, I propose the Khelo India Mission to revolutionise the sector over the next ten years.”

The objective of this mission is to refine talent while generating new jobs for the youth. The government aims to establish India as a global sports powerhouse by integrating sports with the economy and employment growth, rather than limiting it to health or entertainment.

Under the Khelo India Mission, efforts to identify athletes from small towns and villages will accelerate. The government plans to provide promising players with accommodation, nutrition, and training support, preparing them for international events like the Olympics.

Besides athletes, the mission will focus on large-scale training of certified coaches, high-performance directors, and scouts. This will open up new career avenues for those interested in coaching and sports management.

To maintain athletes’ physical and mental well-being, the government intends to build professional support teams, increasing demand for physiotherapists, sports psychologists, and dieticians. Employment opportunities in sports medicine will also rise.

The mission will connect youth and companies involved in sports management and event organisation, creating millions of jobs in stadium maintenance, logistics, and related fields.

Aligned with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the country will also begin manufacturing high-quality sports equipment, such as bats and shoes, attracting significant investment and boosting employment in the sector.

India is preparing to host the 100th Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad in 2030 and is actively pursuing the bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. The Khelo India Mission’s initiatives will strengthen India’s presence and performance in these major international sporting events.
