New Delhi, March 9: In response to disruptions in fuel supply due to global instability, the central government has directed a priority on the supply of domestic and non-domestic LPG. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued orders to oil refineries to increase LPG production and ensure its availability for domestic use.
To combat hoarding and black marketing, a 25-day inter-booking period has been implemented. The Ministry has emphasized the importance of domestic LPG supply and is prioritizing it over non-domestic needs. Imported LPG will be allocated primarily to essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions.
Additionally, a committee comprising three representatives from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and one from the Ministry has been formed to review requests for LPG supply from restaurants, hotels, and other industries.
This decision comes amid market anxiety triggered by uncertainties stemming from the Israel-Iran conflict. An official noted that, on average, a family consumes 7-8 LPG cylinders of 14.2 kilograms each per year, typically requiring refills in less than six weeks.
Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, informed the Rajya Sabha that the government has established strategic petroleum reserve facilities with a total capacity of 5.33 million metric tons (MMT). These reserves serve as a buffer against short-term supply crises caused by geopolitical conflicts, covering approximately 9.5 days of crude oil needs. Furthermore, the country’s oil marketing companies have a storage capacity of 64.5 days for crude oil and petroleum products, bringing the total national storage capacity to 74 days.
