Hardoi, April 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ganga Expressway on Wednesday, a 594-kilometer long project. This is one of India’s largest greenfield infrastructure projects, completed in less than 3.5 years. The expressway connects Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Adani Road Transport Limited (ARTL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), developed approximately 464 kilometers, or about 80% of the total route.
For decades, eastern Uttar Pradesh has lagged behind despite its population and economic potential. The Ganga Expressway is set to open new avenues for development in this region. Improved connectivity, reduced distances, and direct links to other developing areas of the state will play a crucial role in transforming the region’s landscape. Travel time from Meerut to Prayagraj will decrease from around 11 hours to just 6 hours, creating new opportunities for trade, industry, and employment.
Modern technology has been integrated into the expressway. AI-based camera systems have been installed to enhance road safety, helping to prevent accidents and ensure secure traffic flow through an advanced alert system.
Additionally, a dedicated 3.5-kilometer Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) has been developed in Shahjahanpur district. This facility is designed for emergency landings of Indian Air Force aircraft, enhancing the strategic capacity of this corridor.
The six-lane expressway passes through 12 districts and can be expanded to eight lanes in the future. This will facilitate easier access to markets, hospitals, educational institutions, and tourist destinations. The public will benefit from quicker access to essential services, while businesses will gain significant advantages in freight transport and market access.
During peak construction, ARTL deployed over 12,000 workers. The remaining portion of the expressway was developed by IRB Infrastructure.
According to estimates from the Uttar Pradesh government, this expressway will save logistics costs of ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 crore annually. It is expected to create around 300,000 job opportunities over the next decade and contribute more than ₹1 lakh crore to the state’s GDP. Additionally, it will enhance freight speed and reduce inventory costs across various sectors.
The main corridor will promote the swift transport of agricultural products and other goods. Farmers and small businesses will gain better market access, increasing the likelihood of better prices for their produce.
The Ganga Expressway will strengthen industrial connectivity in Uttar Pradesh. Improved access to religious sites like Prayagraj and Varanasi will also significantly boost spiritual tourism, enhancing local employment and business opportunities. It is estimated that over 80 million people will benefit from this project.
The Uttar Pradesh government is developing 11 industrial corridors across the 12 districts linked to the expressway—Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj—creating millions of jobs in the future.
Moreover, religious tourism will gain new momentum. Enhanced connectivity will facilitate easier access to seven major tourist sites, including Gadh Mukteshwar, Kalkidham, Belhad Devi, Chandrika Shakti Peeth, and Triveni Sangam, strengthening the regional economy.
