Samba, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Jammu’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tejinder Singh conducted a review of security and policing arrangements in Samba district on Monday. Accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Jammu-Samba-Kathua range, Shridhar Patil, Singh’s visit focused on enhancing safety protocols.
The Jammu Police’s zonal headquarters shared updates on the social media platform ‘X’, highlighting Singh’s commitment to preventive policing, improved border monitoring, effective coordination, and professional law enforcement. Since taking office on August 31, Singh has been actively engaging with the community through road marches to foster better relations between police and the public.
A major concern for the Jammu division is cross-border smuggling, which poses significant challenges for local law enforcement. The 740-kilometer Line of Control (LoC) and the 240-kilometer international border are often exploited for trafficking. Smuggled goods reaching the interior areas complicate policing efforts, particularly as terrorist networks in Pakistan reportedly use smuggling to sustain operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
The region faces evolving threats from terrorist activities, challenging geographical conditions, and the complexities of cross-border smuggling. These issues are increasingly spilling into remote, mountainous areas of the Jammu division, such as the Pir Panjal range and the Chenab Valley, where dense forests provide cover for hostile forces, complicating anti-terrorism operations.
The persistent attempts at infiltration across the International Border (IB) and LoC, along with incidents of drones dropping weapons, ammunition, and narcotics, necessitate heightened vigilance. Local drug trafficking gangs remain an ongoing operational challenge for law enforcement.
Police personnel are tasked with managing a range of responsibilities, including counter-terrorism actions, intelligence gathering, ensuring the safety of dispersed minority populations, VIP protection, and maintaining everyday law and order. Rapid urban development and limited road networks in major urban centers further complicate traffic management and quick response times during incidents.
