Mumbai, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : Mammootty, a name synonymous with Malayalam cinema, has captivated audiences for over five decades. Born Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail on September 7, 1951, he initially pursued a career in law after graduating from Government Law College in Ernakulam, Kerala. However, fate had other plans, leading him from the courtroom to the silver screen.

His acting journey began in 1971 with a minor role as a child artist in “Anubhavangal Palichakal.” Although his part was small, it ignited a passion for cinema that only grew stronger. By 1980, he gained recognition with the film “Vilkkannundu Swapnangal.” This marked the start of his ascent to stardom, as he transitioned into leading roles that showcased his talent.

The 1980s were pivotal for Mammootty. Films like “Ahimsa,” “Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu,” “Athirathram,” “Yatra,” “Nirakuddu,” and “New Delhi” solidified his status among audiences. His performances in critically acclaimed films such as “Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha,” “Mathilukal,” “Vidheyan,” “Ponthan Mada,” and “Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar” earned him widespread acclaim. Notably, his portrayal of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar remains one of his most memorable roles.

Mammootty’s versatility extends beyond Malayalam cinema. He has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and English films, showcasing his ability to adapt to various languages and characters. With over 400 films to his credit, he continues to embrace new themes and challenging roles, defying age stereotypes.

His impressive career has earned him three National Film Awards for Best Actor, along with multiple Kerala State Film Awards and Filmfare South Awards. In recognition of his contributions to cinema, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 1998.

Even at over 70 years old, Mammootty’s passion for acting remains undiminished. He is still actively involved in new projects, proving that his dedication to his craft knows no bounds.
