Mumbai, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : The film “Padmaavat,” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, continues to spark debate years after its release. Recently, actress Swara Bhasker raised concerns regarding a specific scene depicting “jauhar,” questioning whether it sends a harmful message to survivors of sexual violence.
In response, actress Poonam Pandey has voiced her strong disagreement with Swara’s comments. Once a fan of Swara, Poonam expressed her disappointment, stating that she found Swara’s remarks surprising and inappropriate. “I have always considered her an educated and sensible woman, so hearing such a statement from her is quite shocking,” Poonam remarked.
Poonam elaborated that the filmmakers of “Padmaavat” did not fabricate a story but instead presented a narrative rooted in history. She emphasized that Bhansali’s film aimed to portray events from that era accurately. “I believe questioning that aspect of the film is unjustified. Swara should not have made such a statement,” she stated.
Further expressing her frustration, Poonam described Swara’s comments as foolish and emphasized the anger they stirred within her.
On August 31, during the “Women Life Freedom Talk” event at the India International Centre in Delhi, Swara had reflected on the scene where 800 women commit jauhar. She questioned the implications for rape survivors, stating, “If I were a rape survivor, what message does this film convey? It makes me feel cowardly for not taking my life to protect my dignity. Is this the message we want to send in a society where rape is rampant?”
“Padmaavat,” released in 2018, features Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh, and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji. The film faced significant backlash and controversy even before its release.
