The number of hybrid cars in India’s automotive market is increasing rapidly. Hybrid cars provide an excellent middle ground between conventional combustion engines and all-electric powertrains, especially with superior fuel efficiency without the range anxiety associated with EVs.

Currently, only six hybrid cars are available in India priced above Rs 50 lakh. Real-world mileage test details have emerged for four of these models. The special feature of hybrid cars is that they run on both petrol and battery power.

1. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara – Average Mileage: 22.08 Kmpl

The Maruti Grand Vitara tops the real-world hybrid mileage ranking. It is the sibling of the Hyryder. The Grand Vitara’s hybrid variant features a 116hp, 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain. Testing reveals that the Maruti SUV maintains a big lead in mileage with a city reading of 23.77 Kmpl. On highways, the Grand Vitara’s 20.39 Kmpl mileage is lower than the Hyryder and City Hybrid. Overall, the Grand Vitara’s average fuel efficiency is 22.08 Kmpl, which is 5.89 Kmpl less than the claimed mileage figure of 27.97 Kmpl.

2. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder – Average Mileage: 21.57 Kmpl

The top two cars in this list are badge-engineered siblings, with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder in second place. The Hyryder’s hybrid variants come with a 116hp, 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain, which achieved 20.28 Kmpl in the city and 22.85 Kmpl on highways during testing.

3. Honda City Hybrid – Average Mileage: 21.15 Kmpl

The Honda City e:HEV is the only hybrid sedan available in the mass market. It features a 126hp, 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid setup connected to an e-CVT. In our real-world mileage test, it delivered an excellent 19.80 Kmpl in urban conditions and 22.50 Kmpl on highways.

4. Toyota Innova Hycross – Average Mileage: 14.60 Kmpl

The Toyota Innova Hycross features a 184hp, 2.0-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain, which is the most powerful so far. However, the Innova Hycross is also a large and quite heavy people carrier. Therefore, in testing, it delivered 13.10 Kmpl in the city and 16.10 Kmpl on highways, resulting in an average of 14.60 Kmpl.

These hybrid cars represent the growing trend towards fuel-efficient vehicles that combine the benefits of petrol engines with electric battery assistance, offering consumers better mileage without the charging infrastructure concerns of fully electric vehicles.
