New Delhi, March 17: A group of 204 former senior officials and eminent citizens have raised concerns about the dignity of Parliament, questioning the behavior of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Among the signatories are 116 retired armed forces officers, 84 retired bureaucrats, including four ambassadors, and four senior advocates.
The open letter states that India’s Parliament is the highest democratic platform within the constitutional framework, where the voice of the public is expressed, laws are enacted, and the foundation of the republic is strengthened. Thus, the dignity of Parliament is not merely a matter of tradition but a crucial aspect of democracy’s essence.
The conduct of Members of Parliament within the Parliament building must adhere to the highest standards. The chambers of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, along with other areas of the Parliament complex (such as staircases, corridors, and lobbies), are equally significant and should uphold the same dignity.
The signatories expressed particular concern regarding an incident on March 12. They noted that despite a clear directive from the honorable Speaker prohibiting any form of protest or demonstration within the Parliament complex, the opposition disregarded this instruction. The open letter accuses the opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi, of willfully violating this order, which not only breaches the rules but also shows disrespect for parliamentary traditions.
The letter further mentions that Rahul Gandhi and some other MPs were seen sitting on the Parliament stairs, enjoying tea and biscuits, which is not in line with the conduct expected of members of the country’s highest legislative body. The stairs of Parliament are not a venue for protests or political theatrics.
The signatories allege that this behavior reflects a sense of arrogance and privilege, highlighting a lack of respect for an institution like Parliament. They emphasized that Parliament is considered the temple of democracy, where representatives come to discuss serious issues, and such behavior undermines its dignity.
The letter continues to state that Rahul Gandhi has previously diminished the level of public discourse through similar ‘theatrical’ behavior both inside and outside Parliament. This suggests that he is using Parliament as a political platform rather than a venue for serious debate.
The signatories also noted that such conduct not only disrupts parliamentary proceedings but also wastes the public’s time and resources. They expressed concern that such behavior from someone in a significant position like the Leader of the Opposition is troubling for democracy.
Furthermore, the letter accuses Rahul Gandhi of damaging the image of the country and its democracy in his attempts to criticize the government.
The signatories urged MPs to recognize that every action they take carries symbolic and institutional significance. They labeled Rahul Gandhi and his colleagues’ behavior as undermining democratic institutions.
The letter concludes with a call for Rahul Gandhi to apologize to the nation and engage in self-reflection. The coordinator of this letter is former Jammu and Kashmir DGP S.P. Vaid, who emphasized the importance of safeguarding democratic values.
