Shimla, April 14: Former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and BJP leader Jairam Thakur launched a sharp attack on the Congress government following the murder of a 19-year-old college student in Mandi district’s Sarkaghat. He described the incident as a reflection of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
Speaking to the media, Thakur revealed that the second-year college student was attacked with a sharp weapon while heading to class. The brutality of the assault was such that she succumbed to her injuries on the spot.
“This is not just an isolated incident; it is a serious indication of the complete breakdown of law and order. The cruelty of this crime has shaken the very soul of Himachal Pradesh,” Thakur stated.
Expressing his sorrow, Thakur mentioned that he personally met with the victim’s family and described their grief as “unspeakable.” The victim’s father, a private driver, is in deep shock and has demanded justice for his daughter.
“The family is completely shattered. Just moments before the crime, the father spoke to his daughter. Within hours, he received the news of her death. There are no words to compensate or console such a loss,” Thakur added.
The BJP leader also raised concerns about a possible larger conspiracy behind the crime, questioning whether the accused acted alone or was influenced by others. “It is crucial to investigate whether the perpetrator acted independently or was under someone else’s influence. Every aspect must be thoroughly examined,” he emphasized.
Linking the incident to the increasing drug problem, Thakur noted that the accused was reportedly under the influence of drugs at the time of the crime. He questioned the government’s effectiveness in combating drug abuse, stating, “While the government claims to run anti-drug campaigns, the ground reality tells a different story. If thousands of youths are already identified as drug addicts, what concrete steps have been taken to prevent such crimes?”
Citing official statistics, Thakur revealed that over 6,200 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act in the past three years, including 66 deaths due to drug overdoses. He also expressed concern over the rising incidents of crimes against women.
“In recent years, there has been a significant increase in crimes against women, with cases surpassing 1,850. This is a deeply troubling trend that requires immediate intervention,” he asserted.
Just a day prior, Governor Kavinder Gupta described the crime as “heinous, inhumane, and extremely disturbing.” He spoke with Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Tiwari and requested a detailed report on the incident.
The Governor instructed police officials to ensure strict and swift action against the perpetrator and to bring the culprits to justice as soon as possible. He also emphasized the need for continuous vigilance and collective efforts to ensure the safety and security of citizens, especially women.
