Flood Devastation in Dagestans Capital Leads to Emergency Declaration

Moscow, March 28: Authorities in Dagestan’s capital, Makhachkala, declared a state of emergency on Saturday due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall, which also resulted in widespread power outages.

The Makhachkala city administration announced on Telegram, “Emergency services are on high alert as efforts continue to manage the situation and assist those affected.”

According to Reuters, the regional ministry reported that over 327,000 residents in Dagestan are currently without electricity due to the adverse weather conditions.

The ministry stated on its website, “As of 12:00 PM local time, 283 settlements, including 89,705 children, are experiencing power outages affecting a total population of 327,183.”

Dagestan’s Prime Minister, Sergey Melikov, noted that while emergency services and officials were prepared for the severe weather, the actual conditions were “worse than anticipated.”

Officials in Khasavyurt, Dagestan’s second-largest city, reported damage to a railway bridge due to the heavy rains.

The impact of the rainfall extends beyond homes, severely affecting transportation as well. Dagestan’s government press service indicated that two sections of a bridge on the Khasavyurt-Kadiyurt line of the North Caucasus Railway have collapsed. The administration warned that repairs could take considerable time and effort.

The meteorological department forecasts that heavy rainfall will continue until Sunday. Prime Minister Melikov acknowledged that despite their preparations, nature’s fury exceeded their expectations. The next 24 hours could pose significant challenges for the region. Authorities are focusing on implementing robust measures to prevent further damage and safely evacuate residents from low-lying areas.
