Jammu, July 2: Flash floods struck Doda in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday due to cloudbursts, causing significant damage to roads and isolating several villages from the rest of the district.
Authorities reported two incidents of cloudbursts near Kahal Jugesar in the Bhalesa area of Doda. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties so far.
However, the flooding has blocked numerous routes, with the Thathri-Kilhotran road being the most affected. Heavy debris accumulation has led to the road being completely shut down, trapping travelers for hours on both sides. The lack of alternative routes has raised concerns about the movement of ambulances and emergency services in case of medical emergencies.
Several connecting roads to remote villages have also been damaged, cutting off large parts of the Bhalesa area from the rest of Doda district. This has complicated relief and restoration efforts.
Local residents have criticized the delayed response to clear the roads, which exacerbated the difficulties faced by stranded travelers and residents. They have expressed frustration over the lack of attention to their repeated requests for proper drainage systems and flood prevention measures, making the area increasingly vulnerable during heavy rains.
Reports of severe damage have also emerged from the Bhatiyas area, where floodwaters entered a government grain storage depot, spoiling the stored grain. Locals estimate that hundreds of quintals of grain have been ruined due to being submerged in floodwaters and debris.
Officials have deployed restoration teams to remove debris and reopen blocked roads, while the administration is closely monitoring the weather, as ongoing rainfall could lead to further landslides and flash floods.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Chenab River has caused water levels to rise nearly a meter above the danger mark. In response, district administration has issued a high alert, advising residents near the river to stay away and avoid unnecessary travel in unsafe areas.
