Shimla, 17 August (Kiran News). The monsoon continues to wreak havoc in Himachal Pradesh. Heavy rainfall and flash flood incidents in Mandi and Kullu districts have worsened the situation. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in many places across the state till 19 August. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and stay away from rivers and streams.

In disaster-hit Mandi district, flash floods have once again caused heavy damage. Sudden floods in Panarsa, Takoli, and Nagwai areas under the Aut police station have filled markets with debris, severely damaging several shops and houses. The flood in the stream at Panarsa has created chaos. Due to this flash flood, the Mandi–Kullu National Highway has been closed, making it difficult for relief and rescue teams to reach the site.
According to the Mandi police control room, no casualties have been reported so far. The administration has advised people to remain alert.
In Takoli, after the floods, the Pandoh Dam management informed that additional water will be released into the Beas river based on inflow levels. The public, tourists, and workers have been strictly advised to maintain a safe distance from the banks of the Beas river.
It is notable that earlier, on the night of 30 June, heavy cloudbursts at 12 places in Mandi district caused significant loss of life.
Meanwhile, overnight heavy rainfall in Kullu district has added to the difficulties. Flooding in the Maul Khad area of Dohranaala has caused destruction. Debris and mud from the Piradi stream blocked the Kullu–Bhuntar road. A car and a motorcycle were swept away in the debris, and many farmers’ land and crops have been destroyed. In Bhuntar, water from the Khokhan stream entered the market, troubling shopkeepers. The administration has appealed to people to stay away from rivers and streams.
In Kinnaur district, rainfall continues. Traffic on NH–5 is disrupted due to debris at Ranang, Tinku, and Maling streams. Only emergency vehicles are being allowed through Tinku stream.
Meanwhile, the threat has increased on the Shimla–Mandi National Highway. On Saturday night, the road near Tattapani continued to subside due to erosion by the Sutlej river, reducing the width to just 4.20 metres. Traffic has been affected and the administration has advised travellers to exercise caution.
