Canberra, April 3: The Australian government has firmly stated that it will not alter its drug subsidy program despite pressure from the United States regarding imposed tariffs. Health Minister Mark Butler defended the government’s stance on Friday.
Butler informed the Seven Network that Australia will not engage in discussions with the U.S. administration concerning the “fundamental principles” of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). This scheme allows the federal government to subsidize the prices of prescription medications.
“We are sending a clear message to the U.S. consistently, as we know that large pharmaceutical companies there are trying to undermine our PBS and similar programs in other countries. We are not negotiating on these fundamental principles,” Butler stated.
His remarks came after U.S. President Trump signed an executive order imposing a 100% tariff on certain patented drugs.
At the end of March, the U.S. administration updated its list of trade complaints against Australia, claiming that the PBS undermines American innovation and adversely affects the U.S. industry through unfair drug pricing practices.
Under the PBS, pharmaceutical manufacturers negotiate directly with the Australian government on sales to prevent commercial bidding wars.
According to UN Comtrade data, Australian drug exports to the U.S. reached $1.3 billion in 2025.
CSL, Australia’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturer, is based in Melbourne. However, Butler expressed confidence that the company would be exempt from the new tariffs due to its significant production base in the U.S.
Trade Minister Don Farrell’s spokesperson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Friday that the government is disappointed with the U.S. drug tariffs and will continue to push for the removal of these “unfair and unnecessary” charges.
