Five Arrested in Sopore and Pulwama for Drug Trafficking

The Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested five individuals in connection with drug trafficking cases in the Baramulla and Pulwama districts. The arrests were confirmed on Friday as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes in the region.

According to a police statement, the Sopore police in Baramulla achieved a significant breakthrough by arresting additional suspects and seizing more contraband. This operation revealed the presence of a large drug peddling network.

The investigation, registered under sections 8/22-29 and 281 of the NDPS Act at the Sopore police station (FIR No. 23/2026), led to the arrest of two more suspects based on earlier disclosures. The arrested individuals are Mohammad Umar Dar, son of Ghulam Nabi Dar, and Nisar Ahmad Bhat alias Shanu, son of Maharaj-ud-Din Bhat, both residents of Naseem Bagh, Sopore.

Following their confessions, the police recovered a considerable quantity of codeine phosphate bottles from their possession. The accused have been detained, and investigations continue to trace the links in the drug supply chain.

The police statement noted that further arrests and seizures are expected as the crackdown intensifies.

In a separate operation reflecting the ongoing anti-drug campaign, the Dangiwacha police post at Hadipora set up a checkpoint at Hadipora Crossing. During the check, a suspicious person tried to flee but was apprehended. A search revealed charas-like substance in his possession.

The individual has been identified as Farooq Ahmad Malla, son of Abdur Rahim Malla, resident of Hadipora. A case has been registered against him at the Dangiwacha police station under relevant NDPS Act sections, and investigations are underway.

The Sopore police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking. They affirmed their commitment to dismantle drug networks and protect youth and society from the dangers of narcotics through continuous, intelligence-based operations. The police also appealed to the public for cooperation in eliminating drug abuse from the district.
