Tokyo, June 19: A fire erupted at an elementary school in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday, injuring a total of 11 individuals, including eight children. According to the local fire department, the blaze was reported around 11 AM local time.
Most of the injured experienced difficulty breathing due to smoke inhalation. Additionally, two students suffered broken arms, and a female teacher also sustained a fracture.
As reported by Kyodo News, the fire started in a storage room near the music classroom. Firefighters managed to control the flames by approximately 1:45 PM.
Notably, the room where the fire broke out lacked a sprinkler system. Classes were in session at the time of the incident. The eight injured students, all fifth graders, were present in the music class. Firefighters successfully evacuated three students and one female teacher from the building.
Authorities confirmed that all students were safely escorted to the schoolyard. An 11-year-old student who was in the classroom during the fire described the experience as “very scary.”
Earlier in February, a fire at a temple in Yamaguchi Prefecture resulted in the deaths of five people. Local fire officials received an emergency call reporting a fire at a two-story wooden temple in Shimonoseki, which also included a residential area. The blaze completely destroyed three buildings, including the main prayer hall.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway by local police and fire departments.
In another incident, a fire in January in Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, led to the deaths of two individuals. The house was completely engulfed in flames, which spread to nearby homes. Dense smoke also affected the surrounding area, disrupting rail services temporarily.
