Seattle, March 4: The first statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been unveiled in the state of Montana, USA. This bust is installed at the prestigious Mike Mansfield Center at the University of Montana. The information was provided by the Indian Consulate in Seattle.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte and the Indian Consul General in Seattle jointly unveiled the statue. The event was attended by university faculty, students, and members of the Montana World Affairs Council.
Governor Gianforte expressed gratitude on behalf of the Indian government for this gift. He emphasized that Gandhi’s principles of non-violence are essential in today’s world and highlighted the strengthening ties between India and Montana.
Established in 1983, the Mike Mansfield Center promotes ethical leadership, social responsibility, and a sense of public service among youth.
In the evening, the university also celebrated the festival of Holi. Dina Mansoor, the Executive Director of the university, described the first Holi in Montana as a symbol of the arrival of spring and unity.
Many attendees played Holi with organic colors, followed by a screening of the Bollywood film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” at the Indian Film Festival. Participants also enjoyed the traditional Holi sweet, “Gujia.”
Around 400 students participated in a session on “Brand India,” where they learned about Indian coffee and the “One District, One Product” initiative.
The relationship between India and Montana has strengthened since the opening of the new Indian Consulate in Seattle. In June 2025, a group of 10 students from Montana visited India, followed by a 50-member delegation that participated in the “Invest India Business Forum” held in Seattle.
This Gandhi statue at the Mansfield Center is the fourth in the Pacific Northwest region of the USA. Previous statues have been installed near Seattle’s Space Needle, at the State Capitol in Lincoln, Nebraska, and at the Bellevue Public Library.
