New Delhi, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Deepanshu Shaukeen, elected as Vice President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) as an independent candidate, has credited his success to the support of the student body. In an interview, he raised several concerns regarding the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
Shaukeen expressed gratitude to the students, stating, “The students of Delhi University supported me and helped me campaign vigorously. This victory belongs to them.” He also criticized the administration for its negligence, referencing a tragic incident at Satya Niketan that resulted in the loss of five student lives. He emphasized the need for accountability and transparency within the administration.
Reflecting on the NSUI’s defeat, Shaukeen remarked, “If decisions were made based on ground realities, the outcome might have been different. Students tend to support those who engage with them directly.” He pointed out that those responsible for managing the party should have effectively handled internal politics.
Regarding rumors that he was to be fielded as a candidate for the president’s position by the NSUI, Shaukeen clarified, “It was not confirmed who would run for president. Three independent candidates were in the fray, and the NSUI candidate’s name was already decided. It’s misleading to suggest there was a plan for me to contest for president.” He questioned the capabilities of those in charge, suggesting they may not have been equipped to manage the situation effectively.
On Kanhaiya Kumar, Shaukeen stated, “He should have taken responsibility as he is in charge of the party. I believe he was involved in decision-making. A clear stance from him could have changed the dynamics on the ground.”
Shaukeen also commented on Rahul Gandhi’s “Students’ Voice” initiative, stating that students feel a connection with him. However, he stressed the importance of translating this initiative into action on the ground, advocating for accountability among lower-level party members to ensure students’ concerns reach higher authorities.
When asked about the NSUI’s lack of interaction with Rahul Gandhi, Shaukeen shared, “I have met him a few times and feel connected. However, internal politics often create barriers for grassroots members.”
He concluded by acknowledging the support he received from various leaders who stood for the truth. Reflecting on the election, he learned that the candidates who resonate with students will ultimately succeed. He noted that Generation Z is inclined towards new trends, emphasizing that genuine connections are built through active engagement with students.
