Chennai, February 10: The final opportunity for voters in Tamil Nadu to submit corrections, documents, and claims related to the state’s revised voter list is coming to an end this Tuesday. The Election Commission is completing a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.
With the deadline approaching this evening, officials are optimistic that all pending verification tasks will be completed before the final voter list is published on February 17. Once finalized, the updated voter list is expected to show approximately 56.5 million registered voters in Tamil Nadu.
The process began with the publication of the draft voter list on December 19, following extensive ground verification by booth-level officials. After the draft was released, citizens were given time until January 30 to register objections, request corrections, or apply to include their names via an online portal and special camps held in districts. Public response has been quite positive.
Officials reported that around 3.4 million individuals submitted applications for name changes, additions, or removals. This group includes first-time voters, those who have changed residences, and others seeking to correct personal information such as names, addresses, or photographs.
During this period, officials marked several entries for intensive scrutiny. Approximately 1.2 million voters, whose names appeared in the draft list but who did not submit the required supporting documents, were issued notices. They were asked to provide proof of identity and eligibility within the stipulated timeframe.
Election officials have expedited ground checks and document collection to ensure that all such cases are resolved before today’s deadline. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed staff to complete the verification process swiftly so that only eligible voters are included in the final list.
With the special intensive revision expected to conclude tonight, the final voter lists will be officially released on February 17, serving as the basis for all upcoming elections in the state.
Officials have urged residents to verify their names once the final list is published and to report any discrepancies immediately.
