Miami, June 16: The FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Saudi Arabia showcased a thrilling contest on Tuesday. Both teams displayed exceptional performances, resulting in a hard-fought draw.
Saudi Arabia’s Abdullahi Al Amri opened the scoring in the first half, but Maxi Araujo equalized late in the game. Uruguay started strong, with Araujo’s brilliant shot being expertly saved by Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais. Federico Vinas also had a diving header thwarted by Al Owais.
Saudi Arabia’s first significant threat came from a corner, where Al Amri’s quick shot was brilliantly stopped by Fernando Muslera. Another dangerous set-piece created chaos in the box. Although Muslera managed to block Hassan Al Tambakti’s header, Al Amri capitalized on the rebound, giving Saudi Arabia the lead.
In the second half, Uruguay pushed hard for an equalizer. Manuel Ugarte nearly caught the Saudi goalkeeper off guard with a powerful long-range shot, but the ball struck the crossbar. Uruguay intensified their pressure when Al Owais failed to catch Vinas’s powerful header, allowing Araujo a chance to score. Federico Valverde also tested the goalkeeper again shortly after.
Despite Uruguay’s efforts, Saudi Arabia held firm to secure a crucial draw. This result left all four teams in Group H level on points. Earlier in the day, Cape Verde, making their tournament debut, shocked Spain with a 0-0 draw.
Notably, Muslera (39 years and 364 days) became one of the oldest players to feature in a World Cup, surpassing Diego Godín’s previous record by over three years.
