Farmers in Madhya Pradesh to Block Mumbai-Agra Highway Over Issues

Mumbai, May 6: Farmers in Madhya Pradesh are set to block the Mumbai-Agra National Highway on May 7, as part of a protest organized by the state unit of the Congress party. State President Jeet Patwari has accused the government of failing to provide fair prices for wheat and rice to farmers.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Patwari stated that the government has consistently deceived farmers, and its actions are no longer hidden. Currently, wheat is being purchased at ₹2,625 per quintal, despite the BJP’s promise of ₹2,700 per quintal. This year, only 1 million metric tons will be purchased, while the state has produced 2.45 million metric tons of wheat.

The question arises: where will the remaining 1.45 million metric tons of wheat go, and how will the government compensate for the price difference? Patwari emphasized that farmers who are unable to sell their wheat should not be treated as criminals. He noted that the same issues are occurring with rice purchases, and farmers are also struggling to obtain fertilizers.

Furthermore, Patwari highlighted that the minister responsible for agricultural equipment is facing 100 corruption cases. Overall, he claimed that the state government is retaliating against farmers. He reiterated that the Congress party will block the highway on May 7 to raise awareness about farmers’ issues.

To minimize inconvenience to the public, the blockade will be limited to the Mumbai-Agra National Highway. This protest aims to amplify the voices of farmers across the state and urge the government to address their concerns, questioning the status of the Modi government’s promises.
