Kolkata, March 7: Multiple small explosions at an abandoned clubhouse in the Paikpara area of North Kolkata caused widespread panic on Saturday morning. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries from the incident.
According to police, the explosions occurred around 7 AM at a closed clubhouse located at 1/2 C Gangulipara Lane. The blasts were so powerful that the tin roof of the clubhouse was blown off and landed on the roof of a nearby multi-story building.
Local residents suspect that someone may have placed crude bombs inside the abandoned clubhouse. Some believe that the incident could be linked to disputes among local promoters regarding ongoing real estate developments in the area.
Authorities are also investigating whether the explosions were timed to coincide with the upcoming state assembly elections.
Witnesses reported waking up to the sound of loud explosions early in the morning. They noted hearing at least five distinct blasts. When residents ventured outside, they found the clubhouse’s tin roof missing, the main door shattered, and flames inside, with debris scattered everywhere.
Local residents promptly notified the Chitpur police station. In response, bomb and dog squads arrived at the scene to begin their investigation.
Residents mentioned that there were plans to construct housing complexes on the land surrounding the clubhouse. This has led to disputes among various parties. The clubhouse had been closed for the past six to seven months, although locals noted that outsiders occasionally visited the site.
Many residents believe that the ongoing disputes may have led someone to hide bombs within the abandoned clubhouse.
Following the incident, community members expressed concerns about safety and have called for increased police presence in the area, along with the installation of CCTV cameras around the clubhouse. The police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
