Brussels, April 8: European leaders welcomed the two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran on Wednesday. They expressed readiness for the European Union (EU) to fully support efforts to bring peace to the Middle East.
European Council President Antonio Costa urged all parties to adhere to the ceasefire conditions to achieve lasting peace in the region. He stated that the EU supports efforts to restore peace in the Middle East.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, he wrote, “I welcome the two-week ceasefire announced by the US and Iran. I appeal to all parties to comply with its terms to achieve sustainable peace in the region. The EU is ready to cooperate in these efforts and is in contact with its partners in the region. I thank Pakistan and all parties involved in this agreement.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that this agreement is a crucial step toward reducing tensions. She emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue to find a permanent solution to the conflict.
In her post on ‘X’, she stated, “I welcome the two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran. It provides much-needed relief. It is essential that dialogue continues for a lasting solution. We will continue to work with our partners in this direction.”
EU’s foreign and security policy chief, Kaja Kallas, described the agreement as a significant relief after weeks of heightened tensions. She also mentioned the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for shipping.
In her post on ‘X’, she wrote, “The US-Iran ceasefire agreement is a major relief after several weeks of tension. It opens pathways for de-escalation, halting missile attacks, resuming shipping, and diplomatic efforts for a permanent agreement. Reopening the Strait of Hormuz for shipping is essential.”
This statement from EU leaders came after US President Donald Trump announced a halt to attacks for two weeks, stepping back from a major military confrontation with Iran. This decision brought significant relief to people worldwide.
The decision was made about 90 minutes before the 8 PM (EST) deadline set by Trump for Iran to agree to the deal, following behind-the-scenes negotiations.
Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social that he would halt attacks for two weeks if Iran agreed to reopen this critical maritime route.
