New Delhi, July 2: Mariano Caucino, Argentina’s Ambassador to India, has drawn attention to India’s rising stature in the changing global landscape. Speaking at a conference in the national capital, he emphasized that despite increasing uncertainty in current global conditions, one thing is clear: the significance of the Asia and Indo-Pacific region is continuously growing, with India emerging as one of the world’s most crucial nations.
Addressing the India-Latin America and Caribbean Trade and Diplomatic Conference at the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) auditorium, Caucino stated, “Today, every diplomatic dialogue begins with the changing global circumstances and uncertainties. However, new realities have emerged, with the growing role of Asia and the Indo-Pacific being paramount.”
He noted, “The pace at which India is progressing has positioned it among the most important countries globally. As the world’s most populous nation, every country is now paying more attention to India than ever before.”
Discussing India-Argentina relations, the Ambassador highlighted the long-standing strong diplomatic ties between the two nations. He pointed out that Argentina established its embassy in New Delhi in 1950, making it one of the first Latin American countries to do so. Subsequently, in 2009, a consulate was opened in Mumbai, and in 2019, the relationship was elevated to a ‘Strategic Partnership’. This year, Argentina also set up an agricultural office in New Delhi.
Caucino remarked that Argentina and South America, in general, can play a significant role in fulfilling India’s developmental ambitions. The Indian government has set a goal to become a developed nation by 2047, and efforts are ongoing to make the economy more open and diversified.
He mentioned that India has now become Argentina’s sixth-largest trading partner, reflecting the rapidly growing trade and cooperation between the two countries. “Although our countries are geographically distant, our collaboration will continue to strengthen due to mutual interests,” he added.
The Ambassador also noted that policymakers and diplomatic institutions in both countries understand India’s strategic importance on the global stage. He described India as one of the five largest economies in the world, highlighting it as the fastest-growing major economy. He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role on the global front.
Caucino underscored Argentina’s contribution to India’s food security, stating that Argentina is currently the largest supplier of edible oils to India. Argentina exports soybean oil, sunflower oil, pulses, and leather to India. Additionally, minerals like lithium and copper are emerging as significant trade areas between the two nations.
