Berlin, September 25 (Udaipur Kiran News): German club SC Freiburg began their Europa League group stage journey with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Swiss side FC Basel on Wednesday night.

Basel started aggressively, with Albian Ajeti forcing Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu into an early save in the second minute. Freiburg, however, settled into rhythm and struck first in the 30th minute when Osterhage, on his Europa League debut, scored with a low shot after a high-pressing move initiated by Johann Manzambi.
Freiburg doubled their lead early in the second half as Maximilian Eggestein converted a fine header from Vincenzo Grifo’s cross, making it 2-0 despite Mirko Salvi’s attempt to save.
Basel fought back late and pulled one back in the 84th minute through substitute Philipp Oettl, who curled a stunning shot from outside the box to make it 2-1. Despite the pressure, Freiburg defended resolutely in the final minutes to secure three points.
This marked Freiburg’s second consecutive win, following a domestic league victory last weekend. They will next face Italian club Bologna in Europe, while Basel meet VfB Stuttgart.
Match-winner Osterhage reflected: “The atmosphere was incredible from the start. Even though it finished 2-1, this was a fantastic result. Basel are a quality team, and you really have to work hard against them.”
