New Delhi, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : Experienced Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne has been appointed captain of Queensland for the upcoming ODI Cup after being dropped from the national ODI team for the African tour.
Despite being sidelined for the ODI series against Zimbabwe and South Africa due to poor form, Labuschagne retained his place in the Test squad for the series against South Africa. Before the Test players depart for South Africa, he will lead Queensland in matches against Victoria on Saturday and New South Wales the following Monday.
Labuschagne has struggled to score runs across all formats, with his last international century coming over three years ago. Questions about his position in Test cricket have been raised for some time, with former captain Ricky Ponting also voicing concerns.
Since the 2023 Ashes, Labuschagne has not scored a Test century, averaging just 25.43 during that period. Addressing the criticism he has faced, Labuschagne stated that he is doing everything possible to regain his form. In an interview with ‘7 News’, he remarked, “As a player, you invite criticism because it is performance-based. My criticism is not about my character; it’s about my game. I have allowed it to happen over the past two years. Those who know me understand that I am trying my best to return to my top form.”
