Brussels, February 16: European Union Commissioner Dubravka Suica will participate in the inaugural meeting of Trump‘s Board of Peace. She is set to travel to Washington this week, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the EU Commission.
According to Reuters, Commissioner Suica will attend the meeting as an observer. Spokesperson Guillaume Mercier clarified to reporters, “The EU Commission is not becoming a member of the Board of Peace; we will participate in this meeting to uphold our previous resolution on implementing a ceasefire in Gaza and to engage in international efforts for reconstruction.”
This move by the EU indicates that Brussels is not entirely dismissing collaboration with the Board led by Trump, especially as most EU member states have formally rejected membership and concerns regarding the charter and governance.
Brussels has also raised questions about the “scope” of the Board, which all 27 member countries are expected to sign. The EU is the largest donor providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians. Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023, the EU has contributed a total of €1.65 billion to the region. This is why the EU is keen to avoid being sidelined by the U.S. in any reconstruction efforts.
The Board of Peace, launched by Trump in January at Davos, aims to monitor changes in Gaza as part of a 20-point peace plan established last year. However, the charter has raised concerns among European nations, particularly regarding the provision that allows Trump to remain as the Board’s chairman for life, even after leaving the presidency.
