Ethiopian PM Expresses Gratitude to Modi for Election Congratulations

Addis Ababa, June 24: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali expressed his gratitude on Wednesday for the congratulations received from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his electoral victory. He emphasized the desire to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations.

Referring to Modi as a “trusted friend and elder brother,” Abiy noted that his historic mandate reflects the robust democratic tradition of the world’s largest democracy.

In a post on the social media platform X, Abiy wrote, “Thank you, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, my trusted friend and elder brother. Your historic mandate showcases the democratic strength of the world’s largest democracy. Ethiopia and India are connected through historical ties, partnerships, and shared aspirations. We are eager to advance our strategic partnership and continue this journey.”

This response came after Modi congratulated him on his victory in Ethiopia’s parliamentary elections.

On Tuesday, Modi congratulated Abiy Ahmed Ali and his Prosperity Party on their decisive win, stating that India places immense importance on its historical, multifaceted, and deep-rooted relations with Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian National Election Board (NEBE) announced on Sunday that the ruling Prosperity Party secured victory in the country’s seventh general election, winning 438 out of 486 seats.

According to Ethiopia’s constitution, the party or coalition that gains a majority forms the government and nominates the Prime Minister.

Last December, Prime Minister Modi visited Ethiopia for two days, where both leaders engaged in extensive discussions on political cooperation, economic partnerships, and strategic relations. During this visit, they also participated in tree planting under the “One Tree for Mother” initiative and Ethiopia’s “Green Legacy” program.

Modi was also honored with Ethiopia’s highest civilian award, the “Great Honor Medal of Ethiopia.”
