London, June 13: England’s preparations for the second Test against New Zealand are facing challenges due to concerns over Ollie Robinson’s fitness. The fast bowler is scheduled for a knee scan. In response, England has included uncapped fast bowler Henry Crocombe as Robinson’s cover.
Robinson played a crucial role in England’s victory at Lord’s, taking seven wickets. However, he reported knee pain following a training session. With the second Test set to begin at The Oval on June 17, time is running short for his recovery.
According to information released by England Cricket on Saturday, “The Sussex fast bowler has been selected as a cover for Ollie Robinson, who is expected to undergo a precautionary knee scan this afternoon. Robinson experienced pain after Friday’s training session. Best wishes, Ollie.”
Robinson’s fitness concerns have opened the door for Crocombe, who is set to make his debut for the senior England team. The 24-year-old Sussex bowler has made a name for himself with consistent performances in domestic cricket. This season, Crocombe has taken 21 wickets in seven matches and further enhanced his reputation last month with figures of 4-65 against South Africa A while playing for England Lions.
Both England’s head coach Brendan McCullum and managing director Rob Key have recently praised Henry Crocombe.
The concern over Robinson’s fitness is heightened as captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson are also unavailable for this Test. If Robinson does not recover in time, Crocombe could make his debut at The Oval.
England secured a 115-run victory in the first Test held at Lord’s.
