Empowering Women: Livelihood Initiative Transforms Lives in Saharsa

Saharsa, March 12: In Saharsa district of Bihar, the ‘Livelihood Didis’ sewing center is empowering women to become self-reliant. Women associated with the Livelihood group are sewing shirts and pants, enhancing their economic strength.

Under a state government initiative, 60 women have been connected to new employment opportunities. These women are being empowered through the sewing center located in Shahpur Ward Number 7 of Saharsa. This sewing and production center has opened up job prospects for them.

One participant, Kajal Kumari from Patori Panchayat in the Sattar Katiya block, shared her story. Her husband works as a mason, but his income was insufficient for the family. After joining the Livelihood program and utilizing her sewing skills, she now sews 10 to 15 garments daily, earning between 12,000 to 15,000 rupees a month. She expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the district administration for the opportunity to join the Livelihood group.

Kajal mentioned that seeing herself at work brings her joy, and her earnings have significantly improved her family’s situation. After receiving sewing training, she found employment at the sewing center.

Another participant, Kiran Devi, recounted her previous experience of sewing and weaving in her village, which provided minimal income. Since joining the Livelihood group, she has gained access to new job opportunities. She earns up to 45 rupees per garment, allowing her to produce 10 to 15 garments daily and secure a good income. Kiran thanked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, stating that the Livelihood initiative is commendable. She noted that what used to be a day wasted at home is now filled with productive work, leading to financial gains and a well-supported family.

Prabhat Kumar Jha, the commissioner of Saharsa Municipal Corporation, emphasized the government’s high priority for the Livelihood initiative. Women in Shahpur Ward Number 7 have been linked to the sewing center, which has also provided sewing machines. The Livelihood Didis will sew children’s shirts, skirts, and other garments, selling their products directly to benefit from their work.
