Election Commission Sends Notification for New Assemblies in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal

New Delhi, May 5: One day after the announcement of assembly election results, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has sent notifications regarding the formation of new assemblies to the governors of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, as well as to the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

The tenures of the assemblies in these four states and one union territory will end between May 7 and June 15. The ECI notifications have paved the way for the leaders of the victorious parties in each state and union territory to claim the formation of the government before the current assembly terms expire.

The West Bengal assembly’s term ends on May 7, Tamil Nadu’s on May 10, Assam’s on May 20, Kerala’s on May 23, and Puducherry’s on June 15.

These notifications from the Election Commission come against the backdrop of allegations of electoral fraud made by outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has refused to resign.

Chief Ministers M.K. Stalin of Tamil Nadu and Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala have accepted their defeats in the elections and submitted their resignations to their respective governors. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee denied the possibility of voluntarily resigning as Chief Minister.

According to Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress’s “defeat” this time is not a true loss, as the election results do not reflect the genuine mandate of the people. She stated, “Why should I resign now? We have not truly been defeated. If these results reflect large-scale rigging and vote theft, then the question of resignation does not arise.”

Banerjee claimed that after the election results were declared on Monday night, top leaders of the opposition INDIA alliance, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, and Hemant Soren, assured her of their support. She also emphasized the need to strengthen the opposition INDIA alliance to organize a nationwide movement against the Bharatiya Janata Party and the NDA-led central government.
