New Delhi, February 24: The Election Commission of India organized a national roundtable conference with state election commissioners. This event took place on February 24, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar presided over the meeting, which also saw the presence of Election Commissioners Dr. Sukbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi. State election commissioners from all states and union territories attended the conference along with their legal and technical experts. Chief Electoral Officers were also part of this gathering.

The primary focus of the conference was to prepare a clean voter list, deemed the foundation of democracy. The Chief Election Commissioner emphasized that conducting elections efficiently and transparently strengthens democracy.

In the interest of national and constitutional matters, the Election Commission suggested enhancing coordination among all state election commissioners. This includes establishing a mutual agreement and legal framework to share world-class facilities such as the ECI-Net digital platform, electronic voting machines, voter lists, and the Indian Institute of Election Management.

The Election Commission and state election commissioners will collaborate to harmonize laws related to elections for panchayats and urban bodies with those governing parliamentary and state assembly elections. The Commission urged state election commissioners to actively participate in international electoral activities. It also proposed that such national roundtable conferences be held annually, particularly alongside international meetings chaired by the Election Commission.

All suggestions made by state election commissioners will undergo thorough examination by a joint team of legal and technical officials led by the relevant departments of the Election Commission. To make the best decisions in the national interest, a forward plan will be prepared and submitted to the Election Commission within the next three months, tailored to the states and union territories.

This conference marks a significant step towards strengthening cooperative federalism and enhancing the electoral process. It aims to improve technical and legal coordination in electoral management, thereby fortifying the foundation of democracy.
