CBI Raids Eastern Coalfields Employees Home Over Bribery Allegations

Kolkata, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched an operation against an employee of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) in West Bengal following complaints of bribery and misconduct. The raids occurred late Wednesday night at the residence and office of Shankarman Harijan, an employee at the South Shyamala colliery, located within the jurisdiction of the Pandabeswar police station.

During the operation, Harijan was absent, but his son, Pankaj Harijan, was taken into custody for questioning. The CBI team seized various documents from both locations as part of their investigation into alleged corruption involving colliery workers.

Sources indicate that the case stems from a complaint by a colliery employee who sought lighter duties due to health issues. Allegations suggest that Harijan demanded money, claiming he could facilitate the duty change in exchange for a bribe.

Following the complaint, the central agency initiated an inquiry to verify the claims and gather evidence. The simultaneous searches at Harijan’s home and his office at the colliery were conducted to uncover further details.

The operation lasted several hours, during which investigators meticulously examined the seized documents and other items. As Harijan was not found, his son remained in custody to help officials gather information regarding transactions and activities related to the alleged bribery.

Local residents reported that the CBI team conducted a thorough search of the home, scrutinizing numerous documents. With Shankarman Harijan absent, investigators focused on questioning Pankaj Harijan.

The CBI is currently analyzing the documents obtained during the raids to determine whether Harijan was involved in other bribery cases related to securing work benefits for employees. Authorities are also investigating the potential involvement of other ECL officials or employees in this alleged scheme. Pankaj Harijan is being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation.
