Agartala, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Tripura police arrested eight individuals, including the owner of a private rehabilitation center, following the alleged assault and subsequent death of a young man. The incident has raised serious concerns about the treatment practices at such facilities.
Authorities reported that the owner of the Swapan Foundation Rehabilitation Center, Shubham Biswas, and several staff members were among those apprehended. This action comes after Shahna Das Bhattacharya filed a complaint at the NCC police station on August 16. She alleged that her husband, Tuhin Subhra Bhattacharya, was attacked at the center where he had been admitted on August 9.
After the alleged assault, Tuhin was transported to Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctors. Shahna’s complaint also indicated that the family had made multiple payments to the rehabilitation center for Tuhin’s treatment, medications, and consultations, but the center continued to demand additional payments.
Following her complaint, police initiated an investigation at the NCC police station. Preliminary evidence suggests involvement from the center’s owner and the eight arrested individuals. Initial investigations revealed signs of physical assault on the deceased, as noted in the autopsy report.
Police officials stated that there had been no prior complaints against the center. However, based on the current investigation, they have gathered sufficient evidence against the arrested individuals. The eight suspects are set to be presented in a local court, where authorities will seek remand for further investigation.
In a related statement, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha affirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related issues. He urged law enforcement agencies to take all necessary measures to curb drug-related activities. Additionally, the state government has decided to establish rehabilitation centers in all eight districts of Tripura, allocating ₹20 crore for each center.
