Patna, February 13: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has temporarily attached assets worth ₹17.35 lakh belonging to former Chief General Manager and Regional Officer of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Sadre Alam, under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.
According to ED officials, the attached property is registered agricultural land in Sadre Alam’s name. This provisional attachment order was issued in connection with allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income and laundering money obtained from criminal activities.
The ED initiated its investigation based on an FIR lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) in Patna, under Sections 7, 8, and Section 13(1)(b) along with Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The FIR alleges that Sadre Alam purchased assets worth approximately ₹89.09 lakh between July 2021 and September 2022, exceeding his known income sources. The ED’s investigation revealed that the proceeds of crime were allegedly laundered through a complex money trail, involving large cash deposits into bank accounts linked to Alam, which were later routed through multiple layers of bank transfers.
During a previous search operation conducted by the CBI, ₹71.01 lakh in cash and jewelry were recovered from Alam’s residence. The accused reportedly failed to provide satisfactory explanations or documentary evidence regarding the source of the recovered cash.
Out of the total proceeds of crime valued at ₹89.09 lakh, the CBI had already seized assets worth ₹71.01 lakh. The remaining ₹17.35 lakh has now been provisionally attached by the ED as agricultural land under Section 5(1) of the PMLA, 2002. Further investigations into the case are ongoing.
