Chandigarh, May 9: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a raid at the residence of Sanjeev Arora, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Punjab government cabinet minister, early Saturday morning. This action has intensified political rhetoric in Punjab, with AAP leaders accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to intimidate their legislators.
Kuldeep Dhaliwal, the chief spokesperson for the Punjab government and an MLA, stated, “It is no surprise that the ED is raiding Minister Sanjeev Arora’s residence today. The BJP resorts to such tactics to instill fear, but they do not realize that this will not yield any results. The people of Punjab are not easily intimidated. Sanjeev Arora is a businessman, and the BJP is troubling him without cause; nothing will come of this.”
Cabinet Minister Aman Arora added, “With the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab, the BJP is orchestrating these ED actions to intimidate and divide us. Previous actions by the BJP yielded no results, yet they have sent the ED again. This time will be no different.”
Meanwhile, senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia commented on social media platform X, stating, “The ED has conducted raids at five locations in Delhi, Gurgaon, and Chandigarh related to Hampton Sky Realty Limited and Minister Sanjeev Arora. These raids include the company’s offices and Arora’s residence.”
He noted that the ED is investigating an alleged ₹100 crore fake GST mobile phone purchase and export racket linked to money laundering and the ’round-tripping’ of funds from Dubai to India. Allegations suggest that fake GST bills were used from firms that do not actually exist, allowing for fraudulent claims on ITC, export refunds, and duty drawbacks. The investigation indicates significant losses to the government treasury, with substantial personal gains allegedly made, leading to the misappropriation of public funds for personal luxury.
