ECI Issues Notice to Kharge Over Terrorist Remark, Congress Claims Intimidation Tactics

New Delhi, April 23: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a notice to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge following his controversial ‘terrorist’ remark. The party alleged on Thursday that central agencies are being used to intimidate opposition parties.

The ECI took serious note of Kharge’s comments, in which he reportedly referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘terrorist.’ The commission demanded clarification from him within 24 hours.

This controversy began during a press conference in Chennai on Tuesday, where Kharge used the term ‘terrorist’ in response to a question about the Prime Minister. He later clarified that his statement was misinterpreted.

Reacting to the incident, Congress MP Tariq Anwar stated, “I believe the Congress party will respond to this. Although he clarified yesterday, that was not the intent of his statement. The way PM Modi uses the ED, CBI, and other agencies is meant to intimidate people, especially the opposition.”

Senior Congress leader Udit Raj referenced the ECI’s notice and accused the BJP of having a casteist mindset. He emphasized that Kharge, coming from the Dalit community and being the president of the country’s second-largest party, is intolerable to them.

Udit Raj also mentioned former BJP President Bangaru Laxman, saying, “He had to go to jail. This casteist thinking is so dangerous that they have defamed their own national president, sent him to jail, and ruined his life. This shows the extent of hatred they harbor for leaders of other parties. This notice was not sent by the Election Commission of India, but by the BJP. There is no difference between the two now.”

Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad remarked, “Generally, no one should use derogatory language. It goes against our values and conduct. Even if one disagrees with another’s policies or plans, personal comments, especially about the Prime Minister, are inappropriate.”

Another Samajwadi Party leader, ST Hasan, criticized the ECI’s approach, accusing it of selective action. He stated, “We never expected the Election Commission to be so selective. Those who openly spread venom in Bengal have not received any notice to date. If Kharge said that the Prime Minister behaves like a terrorist, it has caused discomfort. He did not label the Prime Minister a terrorist; he said the Prime Minister behaves like one. I don’t think he said anything shocking.”
