Earth Hour: A Global Call to Action for Environmental Responsibility

New Delhi, March 28: Earth Hour, the world’s largest grassroots movement for environmental awareness, is celebrated on the last Saturday of March. Today, it will take place globally from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

Earth Hour encourages people worldwide to turn off unnecessary lights during this hour. The initiative asks individuals to dedicate 60 minutes to the Earth, promoting positive actions like saving electricity, planting trees, or taking small steps to protect the environment.

Launched in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour started as a local event with a few thousand participants. Over the past 19 years, it has grown into a global phenomenon, engaging millions across more than 190 countries and regions.

Participants are encouraged to turn off unnecessary lights in homes, offices, and public spaces from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. In 2026, Earth Hour celebrates its 20th anniversary, symbolizing collective action and awareness for the protection of our planet.

The campaign aims to do more than just save electricity for one hour. It seeks to educate people on responsible energy use in their daily lives. Saving electricity reduces carbon emissions, helping to combat climate change. This small initiative sends a significant message about environmental conservation.

In India, the impact of Earth Hour continues to grow each year. Major cities participate actively, with iconic monuments, government buildings, hotels, malls, and private institutions joining the movement. Beyond just turning off lights, the campaign emphasizes eco-friendly activities, tree planting, reducing plastic use, and adopting sustainable lifestyles. Community storytelling and collective action are being promoted at the grassroots level.
