EAM S. Jaishankar Engages with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at G7 Meeting

Paris, March 27: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Serne-le-Ville, France, on Friday.

Jaishankar shared on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Had a productive conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this morning.”

According to the US State Department, Rubio is set to meet with foreign ministers from partner countries to discuss shared security concerns and collaboration opportunities. Prior to his visit, the State Department indicated that key discussion topics would include the Russia-Ukraine war, the situation in the Middle East, and threats to global peace and stability.

Before arriving in France, Rubio posted on ‘X’, “I am traveling to France to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting to address shared security concerns and opportunities related to the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.”

Earlier in the day, EAM Jaishankar emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation for global economic security during the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. He noted on ‘X’, “Today, we debated cross-cutting threats and sovereignty in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ session. Highlighted the significance of freedom of navigation for global economic security and raised concerns about the connection between narco-terrorism. Appreciated ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation in critical minerals and their value chains.”

He also had a brief meeting with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

On Thursday, Jaishankar shared his views on the International Middle East Economic Conference (IMEEC) during the second session of the G7 Foreign Ministers with invited partners. In his speech, he stressed the urgent need for reform of the United Nations Security Council, simplifying peacekeeping operations, and strengthening humanitarian supply chains. He specifically raised concerns regarding energy, fertilizer supply, and food security in the Global South.
