
Brussels, March 17: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, in Belgium on Monday. The discussions focused on recent developments in West Asia and Ukraine. Minister Jaishankar appreciated von der Leyen’s perspective on contemporary global events.
Jaishankar shared details of the meeting on his social media account, stating, “It was a pleasure to meet Ursula von der Leyen this afternoon. Her highly successful state visit to India in January marked a significant turning point in our relations. We are actively working on the follow-up. I appreciate her views on current global events.”
Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that India and the European Union (EU) are concentrating on the efficient implementation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and security and defense partnerships to benefit both nations’ citizens as soon as possible.
She noted on her social media account, “Had a good meeting with S. Jaishankar today. We signed our Free Trade Agreement and security and defense partnership during the EU-India summit in January.”
She further stated, “Now we are focusing on its efficient implementation so that the people of Europe and India can benefit as soon as possible. We also discussed the events in the Middle East and Ukraine. Peace, stability, and energy security are our shared goals.”
Minister Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to Belgium at the invitation of EU High Representative and Vice President Kaja Kallas to engage in discussions at the Foreign Affairs Council meeting with foreign ministers from the 27 EU member states.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, “During this visit, the minister will also meet with EU leadership and counterparts from other EU member countries, including Belgium. This visit follows the historic 16th India-EU summit and is expected to deepen the strategic partnership between India and the EU.”
On January 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between India and the EU, highlighting that this historic partnership would create new opportunities for businesses, consumers, and skilled workforces in both major economies.
