Ranchi, August 27: In a significant development, police have arrested the main accused, Deepu, in an extortion case involving a doctor in the Argoda police jurisdiction of Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. The arrest took place in Lohardaga, where the police are gathering information about the entire gang involved in the extortion and other individuals connected to the incident.
According to police reports, the accused contacted Dr. Durga Charan Sinha, a resident of Ashok Nagar, under the pretext of purchasing his ancestral land. During their conversation, they demanded an extortion amount of ₹5 crore. They also threatened to shoot him in Lohardaga if he failed to pay the sum. Following the threats, Dr. Sinha reported the matter to the police, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) at the Argoda police station based on his written complaint.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the police promptly initiated an investigation. Dr. Sinha informed the authorities that he received numerous calls from an unknown number on the night of July 29. He reported receiving around 42 calls and missed calls, during which he was threatened. The incessant calls created a climate of fear for Dr. Sinha and his family. During the investigation, police examined call detail records and other technical evidence.
Based on the mobile number’s activity and location, police identified the accused’s presence in Lohardaga. Subsequently, a team from Ranchi police conducted a raid and apprehended Deepu. Authorities are now trying to determine who orchestrated the plan to target the doctor. There are suspicions that an organized gang may be behind the extortion demand. Currently, the accused is in police custody, and interrogation is ongoing.
The police have stated that the investigation is progressing based on technical evidence.
