Diljit Dosanjh Remembers Komagata Maru Incident on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Mumbai, April 28: Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh has gained immense popularity not just in India but also abroad, thanks to his hit shows and music. Recently, he made waves on the famous American talk show “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” where he candidly discussed his struggles with English and the ban on Punjabis in Canada.

On the show, Diljit was seen having fun with host Jimmy Fallon. They danced to the song “Born to Shine,” and he even taught Fallon some bhangra moves. When questioned about his English skills, Diljit admitted, “My English is very poor,” attributing it to his limited education. He shared that he only completed the 10th grade, which has affected his language skills, although he noted that he has improved over time.

While discussing his sold-out tour, “Ora,” Diljit explained that the name was inspired by audience feedback. People would often comment on the “amazing aura” at his live shows, prompting him to name the tour “Ora.” He also referenced the Komagata Maru incident, highlighting a time when Punjabis were banned from entering Canada. He reflected on how far they have come since then.

The Komagata Maru incident occurred in 1914 when 376 Indian immigrants, primarily Sikhs, were sent to Canada on the ship Komagata Maru. Due to racial laws, they were denied entry, leading to violent clashes. Diljit mentioned a recent concert in Vancouver, where thousands attended to see him perform, despite some attendees chanting pro-Khalistani slogans.

Diljit Dosanjh is the second Indian singer to appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” following Punjabi singer Karan Aujla last year. Priyanka Chopra was the first Indian actress to grace the show.
