Dhanraj Pillay: The Only Indian Hockey Player to Compete in Four Olympics

New Delhi, July 15: Dhanraj Pillay is regarded as one of the greatest players in Indian hockey history. As both a player and captain, he has brought pride to Indian hockey.

Born on July 16, 1968, in Khadki, Pune, Maharashtra, Dhanraj hails from a Tamil family. Khadki is known as the “fortress of hockey,” where his father, Nagalingam Pillay, worked as a groundsman. Dhanraj’s childhood revolved around hockey, often watching children play in the evenings. His older brothers, Ramesh and Anant, were hockey players, which fueled his interest in the sport and inspired him to pursue it seriously.

Initially, his family could not afford to buy a hockey stick, so he practiced with an old one. With his brothers’ support, he moved to Mumbai and joined a club team. While playing for Mumbai, Dhanraj Pillay converted numerous penalty corners into goals. His impressive performance led to his debut for the Indian team in 1989.

Between 1989 and 2004, Pillay played 339 matches for the Indian hockey team, scoring 170 goals, although some sources cite his international goals as 171. He captained the Indian hockey team from 1990 to 2000, leading them to a gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games and a victory at the Asia Cup in 2003. He was awarded Player of the Tournament at the 2002 Champions Trophy held in Cologne, Germany.

Dhanraj Pillay is the only player in Indian hockey history to have competed in four Olympics (1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004), four World Cups (1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002), four Champions Trophies (1995, 1996, 2002, and 2003), and four Asian Games (1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002). He was also the top scorer at the Bangkok Asian Games and the only Indian player to be part of the World Eleven team during the 1994 World Cup in Sydney.

He retired from international hockey in 2004. Dhanraj received the prestigious ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna’ award in 1999-2000 and was honored with the Padma Shri in 2001.
