New Delhi, July 15: Former Indian cricket team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has raised concerns regarding the management’s support for Kuldeep Yadav. He emphasized that Kuldeep should be given opportunities before the 2027 ODI World Cup.
In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, Ashwin pointed out that during India’s six-wicket victory over England at Edgbaston, the team opted for all-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar instead of Kuldeep. He stated, “Neither of these two will fit into the ODI World Cup 2027 squad as they are both finger spinners. Kuldeep has the potential to change matches with his bowling. His record in South Africa is impressive.”
Ashwin criticized the current management for not providing enough support to Kuldeep. He stressed the importance of boosting Kuldeep’s confidence, stating, “If he is to enter the 2027 World Cup with the right mindset, he must continue to receive chances. I would like to see Kuldeep play as the main spinner.”
Notably, Kuldeep was not included in the playing XI for the first ODI against England.
For the 2027 ODI World Cup, Ashwin identified Hardik Pandya as the best option for a fast-bowling all-rounder, with Nitish Reddy as a second choice. He expressed reservations about Shivam Dube’s role, saying, “While I liked what Shivam did, he should be the last choice for the all-rounder position in ODI cricket.”
Ashwin praised Indian captain Shubman Gill, highlighting his batting across all formats and his leadership of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He expressed optimism about Gill’s potential as a captain in the 50-over format. “Shubman has immense batting potential and will manage it well. He has a bright future ahead,” Ashwin noted.
Additionally, Ashwin sees young fast bowler Gurnoor Barar as an exciting prospect for all formats, stating that he could become a champion bowler for India and play for an extended period.
