Edinburgh, July 15: Devjeet Saikia, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been appointed as the head of the newly formed Governance Review Committee of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This decision was made during the ICC’s annual conference held in Edinburgh, where significant resolutions regarding administrative reforms and the expansion of global cricket were approved. During this conference, Mauritius was officially welcomed as the ICC’s 111th member.
The ICC board has approved the formation of two new sub-committees aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of global cricket operations. The Governance Review Committee will be responsible for reviewing the ICC’s administrative framework to make it more transparent and accountable. Devjeet Saikia will lead this committee, alongside Dr. Mohammad Moosajee from Cricket South Africa and Dr. Ross Rewaz, an independent director of the ICC, who will serve as members.
Additionally, the ICC has established a Franchise League Committee to oversee matters related to the rapidly growing T20 and other franchise leagues. This committee will be chaired by Tamim Iqbal, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and former captain of Bangladesh. Other members include Devjeet Saikia, Dr. Rudy van Vuuren from Cricket Namibia, Richard Gould, the CEO of the England and Wales Cricket Board, and Todd Greenberg from Cricket Australia.
By admitting Mauritius as its 111th member, the ICC has taken another step towards expanding cricket globally. The board stated that this decision is part of its long-term strategy to increase the sport’s reach in emerging cricket markets, encourage participation from new countries, and create development opportunities.
On the financial front, the ICC board approved a loan of $12.82 million to Cricket West Indies to support the operational and financial needs of the member board. The board also reviewed various administrative and regulatory issues related to different member countries.
In the case of Sri Lanka Cricket, the ICC welcomed progress towards a revised constitution but reiterated the need for timely elections. Until elections are conducted, Sri Lanka Cricket will not be allowed to participate in ICC board meetings. Furthermore, the board approved the necessary rehabilitation conditions for lifting the suspension on Cricket Canada. The appointment of Tamim Iqbal as BCB president was formally recognized, and a decision was made to keep France Cricket ‘on notice’ for violations of membership standards.
