Udaipur : While monsoon is almost a month away, the Urban Development Trust (UIT) has taken up a project of deepening the Fatehsagar Lake by desilting while it is dry. The lake is the lifeline of Udaipur city tourism and also being a major source of drinking water for the residents, the move is being appreciated largely by experts as well as the mass equally. Hindustan Zinc has joined hands with the authorities in the project and spending 2 crore rupees for it.
” The desilting process will deepen the lake by increasing the catchment area that will allow trapping of more water in the rainy season, helping preserve water longer in years of weak monsoons. We will be doing 2 – 2.5 lakh cubic meter of Desilting of Fatehsagar lake” company sources informed. This month long initiative in conjunction with UIT has commenced and will be completed before the onset of monsoon.
Silting a major concern
According to water scientist Dr Anil Mehta , massive deforestation and faulty land use practices have severely degraded the catchment of Udaipur lakes resulting in increased inflow of sediments into the water bodies in past 3 decades. The solid waste disposal around the periphery is further worsening the situation. Continuous sedimentation not only reduces the water holding capacity but deteriorates the water quality too. A study reveals that sedimenta deposition in Udaipur city lakes that are having an area of 171 sq. km free catchment area and 25.77 mcm gross storage capacity are of the order of 10 mcm i. e 40 percent of capacity reduced.
