New Delhi, June 12: Umang Singhar, the Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, responded to several issues, including the cancellation of Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination. In an interview, he emphasized the importance of justice, the rights of legislators, and the preservation of democracy in the country.
“We have all come together as legislators to discuss how to protect our democracy,” he stated. “The incident involving Meenakshi Natarajan is unprecedented in our nation’s history. If this situation continues, returning officers will act arbitrarily across the country.”
Singhar noted that the Supreme Court is set to deliberate on this matter today, which will set a precedent. “The Supreme Court is more serious about saving our democracy than we are. They will understand the gravity of the situation,” he added.
He mentioned that they had requested a meeting with the President but were denied an appointment. “Voter fraud is occurring through discrepancies in the voter list, and now returning officers are rejecting forms to steal seats. This has initiated a dangerous new tradition in our country. It is now up to the public to decide whether they want to preserve democracy or accept a dictatorial government,” he asserted.
Singhar confirmed that all Congress legislators from Madhya Pradesh have arrived in Delhi. “We wanted to meet the President to protect democracy. If we cannot meet, we will have to take to the streets,” he warned.
Regarding the Jal Jeevan Mission, Singhar accused the government of significant corruption. “We have raised this issue multiple times in the Assembly. The BJP wants to control water supply due to corruption and scams. Why were pipes not fully installed? Why were water tanks left incomplete?” he questioned, asserting that the BJP government is failing to provide basic amenities to the people of the state.
Congress leader Vikrant Bhuria added, “The question is whether our Constitution and democracy will survive. Voting is a fundamental right. Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination was canceled through backdoor methods, revealing the anti-women stance of this government. They have not given opportunities to any women, and when Congress did, it was not accepted.”
