New Delhi, 29 December. Delhi Police’s Crime Branch Interstate Cell (ISC) has arrested two key accused in a major cyber fraud case involving digital arrest scams and fake investment schemes that duped victims of crores of rupees.
The operation was led by Inspector Kamal Kumar and Satendra Khari under the strict supervision of ACP ISC Ramesh Lamba. The investigation targeted cases involving cyber scams, digital arrest frauds, and fraudulent investment plans.
In one case, a resident of Bank Enclave, New Delhi, was cheated of Rs 31.45 lakh through a fake online investment scheme. The accused added the victim to a fraudulent WhatsApp group, made him install an app, and lured him with promises of high returns. The victim was then made to transfer money into six different bank accounts.
After the WhatsApp group was deactivated and the app shut down, the victim filed a complaint. The Crime Branch found that the money was layered through multiple mule accounts to obscure the trail.
During raids in Punjab and Gujarat, Arjun Singh (39), a resident of Surendranagar, Gujarat and a mule account holder, was arrested. He had withdrawn money for commission. Police seized mobile phones, SIM cards, ATM cards, and cheque books from him.
In another case, an NRI woman from the United States fell victim to a digital arrest scam. After arriving in Delhi, she received calls from an international number where the caller impersonated officials from the San Francisco embassy and Delhi Police, threatening her. Through a fake video call, she was coerced into transferring Rs 30 lakh into a mule account.
Crime Branch investigations revealed that the money was routed through a partnership firm’s account in Punjab before being dispersed into multiple accounts within minutes. During raids in Mohali and Chandigarh, accused Varun was arrested. Police recovered 38 ATM cards, 51 cheque books, mobile phones, a laptop, cash, and a car from him.
The Crime Branch stated that the search for other absconding accused continues, and a thorough investigation of the entire network is underway.
